It’s no big secret that most postpartum moms struggle with diastasis recti (also known as abdominal separation or “ab separation”). Maybe you’re one of them. Maybe your friend is. Regardless, I’m sure you’ve seen the many exercises and methods out there claiming to help regain the abdominal strength and muscles that were once there pre-baby.

Most postpartum moms struggle with diastasis recti, or a separation of the abdominal muscles. This condition is common among women who’ve had children, but it can also affect women who haven’t given birth. The condition can be treated with physical therapy and exercise, but it’s best to start working on prevention as early as possible.

What Is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti (di-as-tuh-sis rek-tee) is a separation of the two sides of your abdominal muscles that runs down the middle of your belly.

When you’re pregnant, these muscles stretch so much that they can separate without causing pain or discomfort. But after pregnancy, they don’t return to their original position right away — which can lead to problems like back pain and digestive issues.

What Causes Diastasis Recti?

During pregnancy, your growing baby puts pressure on your belly and pushes against your abdominal wall — this pressure helps create space for him or her to grow comfortably inside you. The more babies you carry, though, the more likely it is that your abdominal muscles will stretch out beyond their natural capacity during pregnancy and childbirth (when you push).

The main function of the abdominal muscles is to support the spine and pelvis during physical activities. When diastasis recti occur, these muscles become stretched out and weak, leading to back pain as well as weakened core strength. These muscles need to be strengthened in order for you to have a flat stomach again!
